Undergraduate, community college and graduate students within the University System of Maryland in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) are invited to submit abstracts for the USM LSAMP 2023 Research Symposium. This year we are planning for an in-person event on Saturday, December 2nd, 2023!

This annual event supports students in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. The LSAMP Research Symposium will enhance students' scientific development and STEM identity. Students view and present research through poster and oral presentations. Registrants participate in the Graduate School and Resource Exhibitor Fair and network with graduate schools, summer research opportunities, research and graduate school funding, and more!

This symposium is supported by the Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation (LSAMP), funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF).

Presentations

All undergraduate, community college, and graduate students within the University System of Maryland in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), are invited to submit abstracts! Symposium judges will review student posters and slide presentations, provide feedback to students, and select the top poster and slide presentations.

Read the presentation guidelines below before preparing your poster or slide presentation.

Responsible Conduct of Research

All presenters must have the express consent of their research advisors to submit abstracts and present on the various research topics. It is important as researches to adhere to the various traditions and values around ethical and responsible research conduct, especially the principles guiding Data Acquisition, Management, Sharing and Ownership. ABSTRACT FORMATTING INSTRUCTIONS

To enter a poster or oral presentation recording, we request that you submit an abstract of your presentation to be included in our program. For continuity and formatting in the program, we request that the following guidelines be used when composing your abstract:

  • Abstract title should be Calibri font (with proper formatting), bold typed, and centered.
  • Author names and addresses should be in regular text.
  • Presenting author’s name should be in bold font and indicated by an asterisk (*
  • Author affiliation, city, and state should be included and indicated by numbers where necessary and centered.
  • Abstract should contain no more than 2500 characters.
  • Use Calibri 12 point font.
  • Use 1 inch margins.
  • Text should be single spaced.
  • Text should be justified with no indentations for new paragraphs.
  • The preferred file format is Microsoft Word.

Abstracts should contain the following information: Brief introduction of topic, study objectives, rationale for the study, and the future directions from the present study. Please do not list references in the abstract text. Abstracts exceeding the 2500 characters, including the title and all the relevant information will not be accepted.

POSTER PRESENTATION GUIDELINES

Formatting: The maximum poster size should be 36 inches wide and 48 inches long. Poster presentations smaller than this size are acceptable. The poster slide should be designed and formatted to compete with those from the presenter’s academic area. The preferred file formats are Microsoft Powerpoint or Adobe PDF.

All posters must indicate the following: Title, presenting author name, co-author name(s), affiliations, city and state as presented in the abstract. Generally, posters should include an Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, Literature cited, and Acknowledgements.

***On the day of the event, poster board displays and push pins will be provided.

SLIDE PRESENTATION GUIDELINES

Formatting: There is no limit for the number of slides. However, please plan to speak 10 minutes with 2 minutes of questions and answers for a total of 12 minutes. There is no limit for the number of slides. The preferred file formats are Microsoft Powerpoint or Adobe PDF.

All oral presentations must indicate the following: Title, presenting author name, co- author name(s), affiliations, city and state as presented in the abstract.
